Texas Redfish

Redfish Trip Report, South Padre Island, Texas
October included two groups visiting South Padre Island, Texas to chase Redfish. Unfortunately, the weather put a tough punch on the days the first group was there. Our experienced guides did their best to take us to sheltered spots and fish were still landed. However, the 'Northern' that moved in dealt these amazing ladies a very tough hand.

The first day for the second group included sunshine and 'flat glass' along the beautiful Texas coastline. These gals got it done!  According to our guides, a big Redfish for this part of Texas is anything over 30". During those three days we had one at 29.5" and 3 others between 30" and 36". One of those weighted in at 14 lbs! You can see Margaret's fish on the left at 33" (with Terry running support during the fight) and Janet on the right at 36".  Visit the Facebook page to see more photos! Well done ladies!

Thank you to all of these ladies for persevering through the challenges and landing some great fish in the Texas October sun.

Redfish -South Padre Island, Texas
October 12-17, 2023

Spend four days fishing and five nights lodging on South Padre Island, Texas. We've booked the same great guides and they are ready to help us find another set of large tailing Redfish! Our condos in 2023 are any easy walk around the corner to the beach and offer single occupancy lodging  with your own bathroom. Join the group for breakfast and dinner and have some space of your own to relax as well.

Fishing days typically start around 7 AM and bring you back around 4 PM. We'll have a little time for a shower, beach walk or  happy hour. Dinners will include a couple of nights at local favorite restaurants allowing you to take in some of the SPI experience and local seafood. We also have a few nights catered in by a long standing local restaurant that our groups really enjoyed in 2022. Plenty of time for fish stories from the day and enjoying great company.

Ascension Bay, Mexico
February 4-11, 2023
10 Rods Total, 2 Rods Currently Available

Kay Fly Fishing Lodge is located in Punta Allen, within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere on the edge of the Great Mayan Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world. We’ll be targeting Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook. Jacks, Barracuda, Snapper and other species are also cruising the flats. Lily Bertrum (lodge owner) reports solid numbers of
the ‘big 3’, (Tarpon, Permit and Bones) are in the area for those who are looking to 'slam'. If you are new to saltwater there are plenty of opportunities to catch fish!

Boats go out most days with both a head guide and an apprentice guide (with two anglers) making this a great trip for anglers of all levels. Most of Kay Fly’s guides have been with them over 10 years -all over 5 years. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere offers the chance to see 325 species of birds, four species of turtles, dolphins, manatee’s and an abundance of other wildlife. New anglers will have plenty of shots to land fish, as many species are plentiful. Particularly Bonefish, ‘the ghost of the flats’. 7 Nights, 6 days guided fishing....$3,999 Double Occupancy

From time to time we like to introduce you to some of the amazing women in flyfishing today. Meet Kristin Wing! She was a participant in the 2022 Sun Valley, Idaho trip and Finatical Flyfishing is honored to have her write and submit this blog.

I started fly fishing over thirty years ago, with my first husband, Mac, with a trek to Blue Quill Angler in Colorado to attend a three day Orvis fly fishing school. We both adored the outdoors and were looking for a sport to do together, rather than apart. Plenty of fly trips later, we found our safe place together on the stream.

A few years later he died. And I kept on fishing.

Why do I tell you this? Because the women I’ve met fly fishing know the power of perseverance, the ‘damn it all’ attitude it takes to put yourself out there even if you doubt your ability to make a decent cast. Or your ability to carry on with your life.

This past summer I fished with two incredible young women (coworkers) from Texas who were eager to fish for the first time on a big, breathtakingly beautiful, technical Idaho river. Tentative about their fishing skills, they tried to keep their expectations realistic while their hopes for landing the perfect fish were high.
